2002 Trip to Canada

After the sojourn in Quebec, Keith and I drive to the cabin and spend a week with just Mom, Dad and Addy. It's pretty relaxing. What did we do?

Here's the cabin. It's still there.

First Dad re-dug the drainfield because the septic tank was full (of thirty years' worth of "solids," as they say in the plumbing business), the drainfield is innundated with roots, and the toilet won't flush. Thank goodness for the outhouse!

Mom got in a lot of surfsailing. She's the little speck of color.

Dad did a lot of reading, as usual. Mostly he read Oliver Twist, to continue his education in the classics. We also watched movies of classics from the public library: Great Expectations and Pride and Prejudice.

Keith took many pictures. Here he sets up to photograph the sunset.

Addy was fascinated by floating things, so he spent a lot of time on the dock.

Keith and Dad and I also made it out on the Yo Slick canoe rig several times in stiff winds and had a ball.

We built some nice fires, even though it wasn't really very cold at all.

And we burried a tired Addy under our dirty laundry.

On the last few days, relatives arrived. Which would have been fine with me, if only the relatives didn't include cousin Giancarlo, his wife, their baby, and their two dogs. Rather than re-hash, suffice it to say that afterwards we basically decided that we're never going to the cabin when they're there again.

Dad and I drove Keith's car home, stopping around Scranton, City of God, for dinner the first day, but were unable to visit the train museum yards. For those not in the know, Scranton, PA, is the City of God because it has more junkyards than anywhere else we've ever seen. Whole hillsides glitter and sparkle as the sun reflects off the windshields of countless junkers. It's quite impressive. It also has a very nice railroad museum, especially if you're like Dad and are way into trains.

We stayed outside Harrisburg, and we tried to catch a movie, but a wrong turn in the directions the hotel worker gave us took us on a scenic tour of Pennsylvania at night. We made it to the mall and theater, but we were too late so we browsed in a Borders bookstore until it closed. Actually, it was a fun evening.

The next day we made it to D.C. and continued our ill-fated sight-seeing. We tried to go to the National Arboretum, but couldn't find the entrance, so we stopped at the Kennilworth Aquatic Gardens instead, where it was very, very hot. But there were a LOT of lillypads and stuff. Then, we went downtown to the Mall, found parking after thirty minutes of wrong turns and filled-up spaces, and attempted to see The Big Green Steam Engine at the Smithsonian. But that exhibit was closed for renovations. So we browsed in the bookstore at the Smithsonian...where we learned that Smithsonian shops are tax-free! Then we made it to Dad's friend's house in Alexandria where we were staying. That night we went to a minor league baseball game featuring the Patriots vs. the Warthogs, the next day we visited another friend of Dad's, and the day after that we drove south to Jacksonville and made it home the next afternoon. Okay, it's quick synopsis, but I enjoyed the trip with Dad. The end.
