I have deep suspicions that the "casual" picture I saw was even Todd Alan Johnson, but was instead in fact Robert Picardo, who can be seen as "the doctor" on Star Trek: Voyager. Picardo also gave what I'm sure were devastating performances in Amazon Women on The Moon and Revenge of the Nerds IV: Nerds in Love (source: Internet Movie Database). However, what most people will recognize him as is Coach Cutlip from The Wonder Years. But I digress. I have noticed that Todd Alan Johnson's mouth in the stage shot posted is fairly large; further research should be done in this field immediately to determine if this is merely an effect of the fact that he is singing. I suggest you petition your congressperson. Some time to deliberate is in order.

Although there is a slight resemblance, probably due more to similar lighting, background and pose than anything else, Todd Alan Johnson and John Travolta look NOTHING alike. Especially in the other pictures. Especially the second program, where the aging thing throws the whole premise off. But really, all that is only superficial. Everyone looks at least a little different on stage, and the question is not "Does Todd Alan Johnson as Javert in Les Misérables look like John Travolta?" If that were the question the answer would have to be, depends on when during the show you're talking about and whether or not hats are involved. But I digress. My point was that that is not the question. The question is whether or not Todd Alan Johnson looks like John Travolta. This presents a problem since aside from the head shot, which is not very illuminating, there is really no other material on which to base a judgment. Which is why Keith (my brother) and I stood outside near the stage door when Les Misérables was in Melbourne, Florida, and got an actual look at the actual person in question (and an actual look at a really, I mean really, big moth, but that's another story). From this experience, I am happily able to say that Todd Alan Johnson looks like...Todd Alan Johnson (and not John Travolta, and really I don't know about Nicholas Cage, probably only a little bit, if at all, in my opinion). Aside from that, all I can say to describe him is...Todd Alan Johnson. Do you need to know anything else?

(Okay...since you asked, we're happy to oblige.... The story of the moth has become a bit of a joke among my brother and me and our friends. It happened like this: I (Lindsay) and my brother, Keith, had been debating the look-alike question for a while, and so when we both went to Melbourne (not the Melbourne in Australia, the one in Florida) to see Les Misérables we decided to settle the matter definitively by hanging around the back of the theatre afterwards. Which we did. We stood back a ways under a light and kept a lookout. Yeah, we're silly people, but it worked, in that we both decided that Todd Alan Johnson as Todd Alan Johnson doesn't look like John Travolta. While we were standing there, Keith also spotted a very big, very cool moth sitting on the wall next to where we were standing, doubtless attracted by the light. He pointed it out to me and both of us were very impressed by this neat moth. Later, when we related the story, and the results of our deliberations on the resemblance issue, to others we got asked why we didn't say anything to Mr. Johnson (we're both kind of quiet that way), to which I replied, what were we going to say? "Hey! Mr. Johnson! Get a load of this moth!" And that's the story. Sort of anticlimatic, but I guess the thought of my brother and I yelling that to a stranger was amusing...to us, anyway. It was sort of a "you had to be there" situation. C'mon, picture what you would do if someone shouted that at you!)

(No) Although I do not think that the resemblance qualifies as a "looks like," it is very clear to me why Katie would make this observation. While Todd Alan Johnson is certainly no dead ringer himself, his CHIN definitely is. I'm not sure how tall Katie is, but if she were looking UP at him from below, I'm sure the resemblance would be more than striking. John Travolta has a large cleft in his chin which causes it to resemble a miniature butt, and so does this guy. So while I do see what she means, that's about as far as it goes.

In retrospect, it's not so much that he resembles John Revolting, but that he has one of those faces that seems to resemble a lot of people-- which is great for stage acting-- with a good makeup artist he could look convincingly like virtually any part he was cast in. He looks a whole hell of a lot like Al Franken, I think, and also bears a striking resemblance to almost all of the other suggestions (aside from the moth, and micky mouse, among other ridiculous suggestions). BUT, I must say that of all the celebrities he resembles even slightly, John Revolting is the closest match to TAJ in the environment that I viewed him in. AS JAVERT.
Todd, I send to you my greatest sympathies. I, too know what it is to be a celebrity look-alike. Where ever I go, be it to a class, work, the grocery store, a DATE, I am told, "Hey, you look JUST like that girl from Third Rock from the Sun!" Picardo. I recently had the privilege of seeing Mr. Picardo in person
(funny how people connected to this web site keep having brushes with
celebrities ... coincidence? I think not ...) Anyway, several weeks ago
I attended the Florida Extravaganza, the largest indoor toy collectible
show in North America. As I was browsing around, I suddenly heard a
voice on the intercom announce that the Star Trek celebrities were at
the back of the convention center and were ready to sign autographs.
Intrigued, I wandered to the back to find none other than THE Robert
Picardo sitting at the table! Wearing a sweater vest, bi-focals, and a
tweed pork pie cap, no less! There were only two people in his line, so
I decided to join it and get his autograph. As I waited patiently, I
became aware of two guys nearby-- they were in the middle of a Star Trek
debate. After a couple of minutes, Mr. Picardo interrupted their
argument and said, "Hey, fellas! I'll give YOU 15 bucks to take this
argument somewhere else!" He was joking, but something in the tone of
his voice suggested that he was rather chapped off. At about the same
time, I realized that Mr. Picardo was CHARGING $15 for his autograph.
That was just a little bit too mercenary (and expensive) for me. So I
walked away empty handed, but with a great story to tell! I hope this
has settled the great TAJ/ Robert Picardo look-a-like debate ... But as
for Richard Grant (from A&E's The Scarlet Pimpernel), now there's a guy
who looks like Todd Alan Johnson! Whoops -- Here we go again ... :)

(Lindsay here, speaking for Katie and Lindsay, and we don't know and we don't know, but 1) plenty of random theater people filter through on occasion and vote so who knows, K.T.B. could have dropped by incognito, though we don't know him, and 2) tajworks.com may have a link to the summer '04 J&H theater's website, and perhaps that will have cast info so you can find out about Kelby Thwaits.)
The head shot also reminds me of Ramin Karmiloo, who reminds me of Joseph Fiennes.
I wanted to say Ron Perlman because a. he has heavy features, like Mr. Johnson, b. he played Beast in a tv show, must be like Mr. Johnson, c. he was in Star Trek Nemisis and you have a lot of Star Trek answers and someone needs to be ashamed of themselves for suggesting William Shatner. But I'm glad you put in Mr. Stewart because it's true, he's classy. But anyway Ron Perlman doesn't really look like TAJ. But Mr. Perlman does look kinda like Cornelius the Ape. Incidentally, Ron Perlman and Peter Wincott were in Aliens 4 together. Coincidence? I think not.
Whoever said Christopher Lambert hit a nail on the head. You should zoom in on Mr. Travolta and Mr. Johnson and do a feature-by-feature check (nose, chin, forehead, et al).

(Holy Ron Perlman, Batman! That has to be one of the most thorough answers ever. Cheers to another nut! Congratulations on your in-depth exploration of the important TAJ/JT issue, and on giving us some new people to add to the "other look-alikes" page. Though, I believe the Wincott in question in Michael Wincott; Peter Wincott appears to be some sort of businessman from New South Wales, Australia. The preponderance of Star Trek personalities is interesting; though we watched Star Trek, it was by chance that we got so many Trek alumi. Coincidence? Again, it couldn't be. We will take the feature-by-feature check under consideration, though we are behind in a) adding more pictures of TAJ, and b) creating a fluttery wee beasties page. Alas, so many look-alikes, so little time.
There's one picture in which TAJ's mouth rather reminds me of the dude from Voyager, but they really don't look alike at all.
The reason people say Abe Lincoln is the mutton chops (and the suit). On that note, we could say Hugh Jackman as Wolverine is reminicent of TAJ.
And TAJ does NOT have a cleft in his chin. I don't know what people are talking about, there.

It also bears pointing out that, like TAJ and Ron Perlman, Hugh Jackman has played the Beast, though only Jackman and TAJ were in the musical, and Perlman was in the TV show.)
